My friend Joe Chun-Chia Huang told me about this little Murina bat, found in northern Japan and Korea. It’s one of the few bat species that slows its metabolism and lowers its body temperature to survive the harsh winter, hibernating in a hollow under the snow. To paint it, I imagined a rare moment: a fox, a human, or something else passing by and waking it from its long sleep.
